94.7 Cycle Challenge
Johannesburg 2006

The work 94.7 Cycle Challenge (2006) took place in Johannesburg early one morning where I rode South Africa’s largest cycling race on a stationary exercise bike for an hour. In this work, I attempted to create another kind of race – going nowhere and knowingly so. A race has a beginning and an end, and the rules are very clear: to start at the beginning and end at the finish. An example of a trickster tactic here would be that one hour where I interrupted the usual order of the race. For an hour I changed the rules of the game and created another kind of race, a temporary order of playing to keep on playing as opposed to playing to win.
