Depression Prevention: A Five Step Performance/Practice
My work 'Gautrain: Ophelia' was included at Bild Museet in Umeå, Sweden in an exhibition in 2008. During this time I was invited to create a new performance work for the project called 'Urban Concerns'. After learning about the many cases of deep depression often resulting in suicide during winter, in response to this, I worked with a clinical psychologist at Sunderby Hospital in discussing what practices could be adopted in preventing depression. Some of the things he suggested was physical movement, joining a choir 'to open up the chest', being with people, light therapy amongst other things. I came up with a five-step program that people, after filling out a form, could sign up for and be part of an immersive experience that included dancing to ABBA, singing in and with a choir and light therapy.
